Top Tips for Designing a Discord Server
The first step when it comes to making a Discord server is to obviously create the server itself. Go into Discord, click the plus icon in the bottom left side of your screen. 4 options will pop up for server themes, click the first one which says "create my own".
If you don't want to design your own server, go to discords.com and choose a template over there.
Name your server, choose an icon, and click "Create". Now we can begin the fun part, designing.
Right click your server icon and click server settings.
Scroll down until you get to "enable community". Click it.
Click "get started". You will see a prompt with two check boxes. Click both.
Click next two times and set Default notification to Mentions Only, also remove moderator permissions from @everyone.
Underneath, click I agree and understand.
Finish Setup.
When you finish enabling community settings, two new servers will appear, we will use these servers in a bit. Right click the empty grey space below all your channels and select "create category".
You can name this category anything you want, but we recommend calling it "information". Then drag your "rules" text channel below the new "information" category you just created, sync permissions.
You can create as many channels as you want, just don't over do it.
Most people use emojis in their discord channel names. This makes navigation much easier and makes your server look a little better. DO NOT ADD TO MUCH EMOJIS. This can clutter the names and make them unreadable.
Use one or two emojis per channel name. A great example of good server design is the image on the right. Look how they added brackets too. Experiment with different designs and find what you like best. Just don't add to much.
Roles are ESSENTIAL when making a Discord Server, it also adds some color. Lets begin by going back to your server settings -> click roles -> create role.
First Create an owner role. In the title section, type "owner". You can color this whatever you want.
Turn on "Display role members separately from online members".
Under the "Permissions" tab, scroll down all the way and turn on the "administrator" switch.
Now that you've created the owner role, give it to yourself by clicking your name on the members list (right hand side of your screen), clicking the plus icon, and selecting owner. Your username will now appear the color you chose for the owner role.
Again, make as many roles as you like, but be very careful when choosing each role's permissions. The most common roles are:
Staff - Give this to your friends or whoever your staff is.
Member - Give this role to members who join your server.
Bot - If you add Discord bots, give this role to them. (This role doesn't need to have color)
Right click any channel you DONT want normal members to have access to, go to permissions, and turn on "private category". It is recommended to add your staff to this channel in the advanced permissions settings.
IMPORTANT: Right click your important channels, go to channel permissions, click @everyone, and scroll down to block "send messages" and "view channel". This stops everyone from looking and chatting in your private channels.
It is highly recommended to make a rules category for your server. It lets users know what they can or can't do and also makes your server look nicer. Some common rules might include:
NO NSFW
NO ADVERTISING
NO MEMES IN #general CHAT
ENGLISH ONLY
Customize your rules however you want. Afterall, it is your server. Just make sure you don't forget important ones. If you do forget some important rules, it wont take long for your members will remind you which rules are missing...
